Do you have a hankering for striptease, but are sick and tired of looking at bored, naked women spinning around brass poles? Or are you in the mood for an evening of performance art and avant-garde posturing with a titillating twist? If the answer is yes to both, then Le Scandal might be your ticket on a Saturday night.

Equal parts lounge act, striptease, circus sideshow, and performance art, Le Scandal is 21st-century burlesque. At times uneven, the show rarely fails to entertain the audience by mixing tits and wit to both shock and arouse. Whether you fancy exotic belly dancers, buxom sword swallowers, ex-Moscow Circus magicians, satanic rockers, or just plain scantily clad strippers, the ladies of Le Scandal offer something for everyone. I say “ladies” because there were no male performers to be seen, though we were told Le Scandal is working on signing up more male acts to keep the ravenous ladies of the audience satiated.

When you arrive at The Cutting Room—one of the many generic, trendy bar/clubs in the Flatiron District—you’ll have to cut your way through the dense crowd of wannabe J. Crew models to get to Le Scandal’s digs in a semi-private room at the back. Be sure to make a reservation so you’re assured a table seat with a good view of the stage, otherwise you’ll either get stuck up in the front behind a column, which will block most of your view, or you’ll be shoved in the back where it’s difficult to see over the heads of the other patrons (the space isn’t raked and the stage isn’t elevated quite enough).

When you’re comfortably nestled in your seat, with your eyes glued to the mistress of ceremonies’ fishnets, you will witness a parade of acts from the sultry to the sadistic: a disrobing Statue of Liberty; a blue fan striptease set to steamy cabaret music; a hip-gyrating belly dancer; a busty woman with a rather long esophagus and a taste for swords; a fire juggler who finds the time to strip between twirls of her fiery batons; or the lead singer of an all-female Satanic rock band, who manages to find some interesting places to whet the edge of her prop knife.

And if you’re adventurous enough, you might just become part of the show…by getting flogged in the closing number, or whatever the erotic fetish du jour happens to be.
