Times Square’s ’90s facelift banished a cluster of seedy XXX strip joints, but this relatively new topless lounge could be the poster child for the clean, good-natured amusement that now fills the void. Sandwiched between a movie screening facility and a tangle of nondescript delis smack under the neon glare, this “Gentleman’s Cabaret” offers polite, arms-length entertainment, the kind of place where a handshake is the inevitable prelude to the $20, one-song (three-minute) lap dance.
The main room is a cozy lounge with a small stage at either end. Pairs of dancers—one on each stage simultaneously—hold the limelight for two consecutive songs in meticulously synchronized rotation. One of the stages has a pole, but upside-down acrobatics would be overkill in these cozy, mellow surroundings. As with any strip club, Lace’s sixty or so performers—who sport a beguiling variety of hair colors, ethnicities, and curves, and who work exclusively for tips—are selling a shadowy erotic fantasy as they shed their flimsy dresses in voluptuous gyrations to Top 40 tunes.
According to management, Lace’s popularity rarely dwindles. Weekdays draw a local/business crowd that peaks around 6 and 10 in the evening while weekends are rife with bachelor parties. For reasons management was unwilling to explain, women must be at all times accompanied by a male companion.
Lace’s champagne lounge/VIP room offers a more intimate alternative to the main lounge. The purchase of a bottle of champagne ($195 to $395) gives patrons 50 minutes in an upstairs room with the performer of his or their choice (couples can choose this option, too), not including tip, for a private lap or table dance. Standard rules apply here—no groping the entertainers; no roughhousing—and the bouncers look like they mean business.
