This innocently named, discreetly located venue offers one of the city’s few surviving all-nude stage shows and is probably the only strip club that can boast direct assistance to the World Trade Center relief effort. In the two weeks following September 11th, none other than the Salvation Army came twice a day to raid the club’s ice machine so that they could provide cold drinks for friends and relatives of the victims at the nearby Armory and for the rescue workers laboring in extreme heat at the smoldering site.
When the club reopened a week after the attacks, many of the girls found it transformed, “like a Wild West bar,” with exhausted workers crowding in for free drinks, eager to talk with each other and the girls. “With ambulances and fire trucks roaring past just outside the door, everything that was burning, it was hard for me to start working again,” said dancer Britney, “but then I realized that we all needed comfort and escape. I started to feel a little like a USO girl.” Dancers also heard tales of horror and humor from survivors and rescue workers alike.
The club is now back to business as usual. A long, central stage ringed with tables and chairs—and strategically designed to allow a full view for anyone sitting ringside—is equipped with two poles and plays host to a wide variety of girls of all races and approaches (from innocent to downright outrageous). Performances last two or three songs. The dancers are clearly skilled and experienced; they work, and work hard, for tips only. The little they wear comes off quickly. There’s plenty of pole acrobatics, shaking, and stroking (including a truly fantastic inside-out anus trick). The subdued audience seems to prefer to deliver their tips on the dance floor rather than into the girls’ waiting body parts. This is an all-nude club, but despite the antics, it’s far from nasty; more of an “upscale gentleman’s lounge” atmosphere prevails.
