Broadway Bares (BB), one of New York’s sexiest and most successful charity events, began as a strip show in a Chelsea bar in 1991. Conceived and directed by a chorus boy named Jerry Mitchell (who, at the time, was dancing and showing his firm ass in The Will Rogers Follies), BB has grown into an annual spectacle that packs a sold-out crowd into the historic Roseland Ballroom. Mr. Mitchell has gone on to win several Tony awards for his brilliant choreography and direction of smash Broadway shows, however, it’s clear that that same creative energy is channeled into this stunning event.
As the most popular fundraiser for Broadway Cares/Equity Fights Aids, BB is one of the best entertainment values in town. The show serves up The Great White Way’s finest dancing T&A (male and female) without distracting storylines or shtick. This is Broadway served "hot" by its talented gypsies who are occasionally joined in surprise appearances by mega-stars like Bebe Neuwirth, Alan Cumming, or Betty Buckley. The sets may not be as polished as the productions from which they’re taken, but as it’s the skin you’re really paying for, who cares?
Mitchell constantly strives to outdo himself and, so far, he hasn’t disappointed. He’s taken the show from a random presentation of Broadway musical favorites to an elaborate thematic production, which is usually pegged to some timely topic or trend. The 2001 show, perhaps too predictably, paid homage to Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey, but nobody seemed to mind the obvious. The skimpy, glittery costumes were soon tossed aside as the show took the leering crowd on a wacky erotic voyage—complete with Mylar spaceships—across the heavens.
Broadway Bares is a night of flirtatious fun and foreplay that’s sexy enough for a date, but you’d probably feel just as comfortable taking your mom. There are various ticket options, but take our advice and buy a general admission seat, arrive early, and get a good spot to ogle the hotties on stage. Among the spectators are adorable chorus boys and girls who didn’t make the final BB cut, and they’re always looking for their next gig. Don’t fail to chat them up at intermission; who knows, you might end the night with a private show at your apartment.
