Escuelita is a gay bar and dance club catering to a black and Latino crowd with super-buff (and extremely well-hung) go-go boys and the best drag shows in town. The club is comfortable for lesbians, straight singles and couples, and gay men on the DL (down-low). There are two bars (one with a drag queen waitress in a towering, butterfly-adorned, flamingo pink wig), a dance floor, and bistro tables in a very dark space with lots of disco balls, strobe lights, and dry ice. The coat check line is long and slow-moving, and the cost is $3 per item, so you might want to wrap your sweater around your waist or dump your stuff on a chair where a friend can keep an eye on it while sipping a drink and watching the action.
The music-an amalgam of salsa, merengue, bachata, R&B, hip-hop, classics, and house-is very loud, with the base mixed so high you can feel it pulsing through your body. This makes for a hypnotic wave of sound and sensation highly conducive to dancing into the wee hours, but not for chatting with cute boys. We're not saying it's impossible to hook up here, but just that it's mostly about the dancing. You'll probably get farther with body language than clever banter. But even if it's not the cruisiest club, it's worth it for the music, the drag shows. Go especially for the go-go boys-sleek, buff, and horse-hung, they dance like maniacs and sport hard-ons all night long while brothers slip dollar bills into their scanty loin coverings. Yum.
