There aren't many options for those of us working slightly above the Flatiron District who want a great after-work cocktail or two to take the edge off the day. After frequenting 230 Fifth and Ilili for the past two years, we're very happy to finally have a new option - the Breslin Bar and Dining Room.
The Breslin Bar is a spacious bar/lounge/restaurant started by the chefs at the Spotted Pig. If you like meat and terrines, the Breslin menu has an abundance of both, especially if you like the taste of salty pork, from pork scratchings to the full suckling pig. The fried head cheese with sauce gribiche is a must-try. Pair that with the cocktail, Lust for Life - gin with lavender syrup, mint and fresh lemon juice, topped with soda water - and the combination of the savory and sweet will also create a lust for sex; luckily, you can get a room at the Ace Hotel to satisfy that urge.
The design team at the Breslin Bar and Dining Room - Roman and Williams - kept some of the original design elements of the former Breslin Hotel and added two large antique bars to accommodate the hip and urban crowd. Despite the potential to have a velvet-rope attitude, the Breslin is simultaneously hip and casual. On weekends, it might be difficult to get a table or seat (the Breslin does not take reservations for dinner or drinks), but on some weekday nights, you can comfortably explore some of the more private and dark corners, and sink into one of the suede couches. The Breslin is perfect for a weekday date if you're looking for refinement and a dark nook for some nookie action.
