  • SPAM is a monthly, mixed-gender queer sex party, the only one of its kind in New York. Billed as “a hot and sexy gender-fuck party” for the LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender) community only, attendees are encouraged to “cum together as dykes, gay men, trannies, and queers in your underwear.” This is the one place dykes can hook up with fags and vice versa, and a place where bi and trans folk can feel comfy getting their groove on because they don’t have to choose a side.

SPAM, which stands for Sadists, Punks, and Masochists (yes, it’s an S&M-friendly space) is aptly named for the “mystery meat,” double entendre intended. With a little bit of everything from New York’s diverse queer community, you can’t tell by looking exactly what SPAM’s made of, who’s into whom, or who’s into what. Anything might happen—and it does.

Put together almost two years ago by organizers Michael of Meatpackers, a successful gay men’s sex club, and Red of Submit, a popular lesbian S&M play party, SPAM is about getting down and dirty and expanding sexual boundaries. Sexuality at SPAM is largely fluid (and fluids are largely sexual). But in order to create a safe space for such delicious debauchery, strict rules are in effect.

SPAM is a party for queers only, and if you have to ask what that means you probably don’t belong there. A big sign marked “No Heteros Allowed” marks the entrance and those seeking entrance to this version of the promised land have been known to be questioned on their sexual identity and practices. This rule is strictly enforced to keep out gawkers and to prevent harassment. “SPAM Quality Control Monitors” prowl the party in official T-shirts, and those attempting to break any of the well-posted rules of safe sex, consensuality, and keeping a respectful distance will be thrown out. Attendees must be 18 or older. To be more welcoming to lesbian partygoers, SPAM has instituted a women-only space (with an equally welcoming queen-sized bed) specifically for women to enjoy each other.

A mandatory clothing check down to your drawers lends a definite sexual charge, and there are as many body types to cruise as there are colors in the gay pride rainbow flag. The secret, underground (literally) venue has a dungeon-esque feel. A long, narrow staircase leads to a labyrinth of smallish, sectioned-off rooms and play spaces, all painted black. Large peepholes (and glory holes) are cut into all sides of each room, so voyeurs can watch unseen and exhibitionists can show off without worrying that their audience will get uncomfortably close. This works especially well with the women-only section, where bi-curious gay guys can get off watching lesbians and bi girls suck each other’s silicone dildo cocks. Those same women might later be seen strolling through the dimly lit back room where mostly gay men get it on with each other in twosomes, threesomes, and moresomes.

Recent sexy additions include a bondage pole, a new sex sling, rope, and of course, mattresses galore. Safe sex supplies offered include lube, condoms, gloves, and even absorbent pads for female ejaculators. Snack food, non-alcoholic drinks, and a shower to clean up afterwards are provided, and a DJ keeps the music throbbing in time with the guests.

SPAM’s core crowd ranges from 70-100 people, and has roughly a 60-40 male-female ratio. S&M scenes are welcome, though apart from the occasional flogging and spankings, most attendees opt for plain, old unadulterated sex. Some come with boyfriends, girlfriends, or playmates in tow; others find their partners at the party. It’s a pretty friendly crowd. As a repeat guest, this reviewer enjoyed a damn good time on several occasions. Highlights I’ve witnessed include a boy-curious lesbian’s first opposite-sex kiss (and nether kiss) in years; a happy, grunting orgy pile on the main “stage” with hands everywhere; and a room full of applause for a particularly loud and impressive orgasm. In a continuing effort to keep SPAM fresh, the organizers come up with special surprises and themes, such as a recent swimsuit party and a rainbow-attired Gay Pride party.

SPAM may be a mystery meat, but at this party, it’s pretty delicious.
