Whoever said that the brain is the human body’s biggest sex organ obviously never went to a SKIN party, where, on the night we went, we saw such an array of beautiful bodies we felt as though we’d somehow walked off of University Place and into a South Beach club. It’s easy to understand, then, why the party is already such a hit in warmer climates (SKIN New York is but the latest in the franchise, joining sister events in Las Vegas, Miami, and LA)—if your body approximates the Platonic Ideal, why not show it off?

We arrived at the event, held in a lofty, sprawling club in Greenwich Village, at around 11pm on a Saturday night. Inside, it was clear that hosts Sal and Danielle had spared no effort in making the space a sexy paradise. A DJ, installed in a lofty booth above the main floor, spun dance tunes to the delight of the crowd below. Huge screens projected sleek, digitized pornography, and tables and banquettes catered to those who wished to spring for bottle service (not cheap but competitive at approximately $200 for a bottle of Absolut). What’s more, SKIN is aptly named. Party outfits ranged from Danielle’s breathtaking backless feather top to a see-through mesh dress on another partygoer, to a simple turquoise thong—and nothing but—on yet another. Sometimes the main room felt a bit like The Strip, USA, with the human equivalents of sports cars cruising up and back, up and back, but nothing about SKIN is sleazy—people come to these parties to see and be seen (and maybe more!) so it’s always a good idea to put your best (erotic) fashion foot forward.

Sal and Danielle mingled all night, chatting with friends and newcomers, setting the friendly vibe for which SKIN parties are deservedly known. In every corner of the club people struck up conversations with intriguing strangers or reunited with friends from events past (many did, in fact, seem to know each other from previous evenings). There was even a specially ventilated smoking room so the reveling didn’t have to stop when the urge for a cigarette kicked in.

SKIN parties, it is safe to say, are not for those seeking an edgy vibe, nor for those who gravitate toward the downtown hipster scene. SKIN is much more mainstream than some clubs—predominantly white, professional types make up their core—and many of the partiers seemed to be from outside of Manhattan. Snobs, don’t let this deter you, however: SKIN can be whatever you want it to be, as long as you’re having fun and playing by the rules.
