On a Thursday evening in early November, a group of women are lined up outside a neighborhood bar. They’re not overly manicured nor are they especially young. They’re professionals—confident and hip without pretension and most noticeably sexy. So where are the men?
Inside the bar, is where. Dressed in various costumes and sharing a bottle of Scotch, a small group of guys are engaged in banter as a chrome pole is erected in the middle of a stage. The motley crew—dressed as firemen, suits, pretty boys, and rockers—seem a bit ragged as one by one they enthusiastically but clumsily attempt to slide down the pole.
Then the doors open. The women rush in. This is the first female-only event in CAKE’s history: CAKE Lapdance—an all-amateur male lap dancing party in which the men give lap dances to the women.
The emcee, Emily Scarlet Kramer, a co-founder of CAKE, welcomes the crowd and states the rules for lap dances: Dancers must do exactly what the women request; the minimum per dance is set at ten dollars, a bargain by normal strip venue standards. Then Emily introduces the dancers: Nick No, Aries, Achilles, and the rest who comically greet their audience—no macho posturing here. They perform on stage, one by one, before heading into the audience to try their hand at lap dances.
The first dancer, Nick No, is a cute ’70s mop-top with a satin pink baseball jacket, a tweed golf cap, and the best butt of the night. He gyrates and mounts the pole—wildly imitating Mick Jagger—and strips off several pairs of skivvies. The women yell and cheer him on. When his dance is done, he is quickly besieged for several lap dances.
Elated (if a bit terrified), the dancers revel in the attention. No matter that most of them move like Tom Cruise in Risky Business. The cheese factor is not only tolerated, but welcomed by these women who appreciate the dancers’ sweet enthusiasm and eagerness to please. The audience shows its gratitude with cheers. Some women spray whip cream and beer on the performers’ bodies. Others lap it up.
Next up is the Big Balls contest—men arm-wrestling in their underwear. Women place wagers and the winners receive a private dance on stage. Somewhere in the back of the bar, a VIP area is set up for women who want to indulge in very long, very sensual lap dances. The climax of the evening is The Full Monty bidding. When the results are in, a few dancers bare it all to the delight of the crowd.
Finally, at 2am, the event is proclaimed officially over. The stage is now a sorry sight—melting whip cream commingles with puddles of beer and discarded clothing.
CAKE, the host of the event, is a New York-based entertainment and production company that caters to het¬ero¬sexual women. The company’s founders, Melinda Gallagher (president) and Emily Scarlet Kramer (web development director), have formal education in women’s health and sexuality, and experience advocating for women’s issues. Their monthly events—which are uncensored and permit men to attend only if escorted by a woman—aim to help women become more comfortable with their sexuality. Annual favorites include the Striptease-a-Thon, during which a woman can try their hand at taking it off, and the Cake Forum, which features readings by writers of erotica as well as writing workshops for attendees.
At CAKE’s website, women can apply for a CAKE Card and sign up for the CAKE newsletter. They can also respond to the latest CAKE survey, submit an erotic story to Surrender the Pink, check out the editorials, or take a look at pics from previous events. CAKE is also an excellent resource for information on various issues of relevance to women.
CAKE’s tagline reads: “Sexy. Moist. Sticky. Hot. Juicy. Sweet. Tasty. Yummy,” and indeed, there is something at CAKE for every woman’s taste.
