Planning a First Date in the West 50s
Dear Phrolix.com:
I just moved to New York from London and met an amazing woman. I asked her out for this Friday night, but, as I don't know New York very well, I don't know what to do on our date. She's a beautiful and sophisticated woman in her mid-30s who is very successful in her job, so I want to plan a date that she would enjoy. We both work in the west 50s, so could you recommend some places to go in the area that would be cool, romantic and fun?
Steven
Dear Steven:
We are all about planning cool, romantic and fun dates, so you've come to the right place!
If you're meeting after work - 5:30-7 pm - start with cocktails at the Museum of Modern Art, located at 11 West 53rd Street (between 5th - 6th Avenue). Those of us "in the know" know that some of the best dates in New York take place in the city's museum, featuring bars and music. And, most, if not all, of the city's museums provide free admission on Fridays after 5 pm, which can save you at least $40. And, there is no better way to break the ice and have interesting conversation starters than to walk around a museum to enjoy and/or critique the art. You might find that you have a shared interest in modern art, or that you can't understand how your date could enjoy seemingly simple (dare we say, bizarre?) artwork, but even such differences in your tastes could help to inspire some sexual energy, which is always nice. So, plan to meet your date in the lobby by the door to the gift shop (the lobby can get crowded, so it's good to offer a specific meeting spot). Then, head to the bar in the back, get two glasses of red wine, and relax on the second floor mezzanine. If time permits (depending on when and where you have your dinner reservations, but more on that soon...), then meander through the museum. Do remember that this isn't art class, but a date, so don't forget to be flirtatious and engaging.
So, you're now ready to leave MOMA. If you don't want to walk very far, then head next door to the sexy Modern at The Museum of Modern Art. If you're in the mood for something slightly more flashy, then go to Armani Ristorante. Read our reviews to learn more about these two restaurants. Either restaurant will impress your date if you're looking for a scene, but make sure to make a reservation, since Friday nights tend to be busy.
So, it's now 11pm - midnight, and your date is going really well. If the weather is nice, then get after-dinner cocktails at Salon de Ning at the Peninsula Hotel - 700 Fifth Avenue at 55th Street - one of the hottest rooftop bars in NYC. If you get there on the late side, there's a chance that you'll find a table, but who cares? You've now spent several hours together in some of the hippest museums, restaurants, and bars in NYC, so it's fairly likely that the date is going well. We'll let you take over from here, but we do recommend a sweet kiss or more back at your apartment if your date is going REALLY well.
