  • Trash & Vaudeville is so punk it hurts. But who isn't on St. Marks? The store occupies a prime location that takes up two sprawling floors stocked with every kind of punk garb, from Old Skool to Ska to Goth, as well as some bondage treats like corsets and chain mail. Upstairs you'll find most of their menswear and streetwear for both sexes. Downstairs are the more upscale items, including men's suits and a decent selection of S&M attire, along with a shoe department bound to seduce even those who don't have a foot fetish.

While decidedly more Joey Ramone than Annie Sprinkle, Trash & Vaudeville is still good for a few turn-ons. Upstairs, their stunning array of schoolgirl minis ($50) in every tartan your heart and loins could desire is sure to stop you in your tracks. Another favorite is the Tripp studded halter in black pleather or red vinyl ($38) and hot pants to match ($32).

But for the real fun, you'll have to go down-downstairs, that is. Bypass the wall o'-T-shirts branded with every hardcore band imaginable and make your way to the racks of playwear. A couple of items to be found here are a rubber suit for him ($230 pants, $275 jacket) and an "open" dress with lace-up legs and bodice for her ($265), both by The Federation. You can also find some nice accessories of the whips-and-chains variety-collars, wristbands, belts-under the counters in the front. Whatever you do, DO NOT skip the shoe section that occupies the back half of the lower level. This is by far Trash & Vaudeville's most solid offering. You'll find everything from flip-flops to fetish chaussures. Most of all, you'll find boots, boots, and more boots! There are boots that buckle, slide, strap, or lace up as high as you fancy in every material imaginable: leather, pleather, rubber, glitter-sheathed, fur-the gang's all here. They'll take you higher with platforms, spikes, clodhoppers, and cowboy and moon boots. Whether you're a cowpolk or a dom, coquette or space cadet, you'll find satisfaction. The truly fierce can pick up a set of heel covers with protruding spikes for extra edge (metal $100, rubber $50). And check out the bountiful (though jumbled) clearance area for a real steal, like a pair of platform, pony hair calf boots for $170 (originally $279). Since NYU is just around the corner, Trash & Vaudeville caters as much to the after-school crowd as it does to the neighborhood lowlifes. This might account for their hardcore bag check and heavy staffing on the sales floor. There is little difference between the disaffected youth browsing and those minding the till. While prices are high at Trash & Vaudeville, quality is low (shoe department excepted), but the savvy shopper/sex kitten is sure to hone in on some good finds.
