  • If you're neither a fetishist nor a materials freak, you have no compelling reason to ponder the wondrous nature of latex. It's a natural-and expensive-product (derived from the sap of the rubber tree) that comfortably holds and molds the body, feels sexy to wear and touch, and even smells yummy-like a chocolaty malt sundae. But visit The Baroness, New York's premier designer of elegant latex fashions, at her atelier in Alphabet City, and not only will you learn about the fascinating properties of latex, you stand a strong chance of being seduced by its sensual qualities.

Flame-haired proprietress, The Baroness, who officially changed her name several years ago to this regal, evocative moniker, approaches latex with the fervor borne of a decade-long obsession. Others may want to buy the world a Coke, but The Baroness prefers to swath it in latex-preferably hers. Latex is her medium, but it's also a metaphor for her life philosophy-forgiving and flattering in its all-direction pliability, sensual in its pool-like luster, luxurious, glamorous, and distinctly appealing. The Baroness, a former costume and lingerie designer, is a latex pioneer, having taken the material from its most common form-super-tight black or red garb worn exclusively behind closed doors-into previously unexplored stratospheres of usage, color, and fit. A good example would be her magnificent, sweeping cape in the pale yellow translucency of the substance in its undyed state. And the experimentation has paid off: The Baroness' website gets upwards of 60,000 hits a day, and her fashions have been featured in many publications from the Village Voice to Interview.

The Baroness offers three lines. Elegant, Provocative Fashions, priced from $50 to $800, features simply cut men's and women's garments available in a vivid Crayola rainbow of colors, such as the electric blue, high-necked, long-sleeved "governess dress" Kim Basinger wore on a late 1990s cover of Detour. The Baroness doesn't believe latex will ever be mainstream, but this line offers the sexy, lubricious designs any body-conscious urban warrior might choose for an evening out. The two newest lines, Bizarre Rubber Creations ($600 and up) and Fit For Royalty (totally outrageous made-to-order garments, priced accordingly), are strictly for fetishists: The Creations line includes items such as hooded body bags and inflatable straitjackets; Royalty offers Renaissance-style ball gowns; mermaid outfits, complete with functional, removable tail; and other fetishistic party-going ensembles.

In her boutique, The Baroness creates a one-on-one environment where she can win over a stylish novice or protect the anonymity of a private cross-dresser. Her workmanship is painstaking and guaranteed for a lifetime. Call for an appointment, visit the website (www.baroness.com), or look for The Baroness label in specialty boutiques around town.

The Baroness established her monthly Fetish Retinue Party as an intimate meeting place and showcase for the talents of New York's' fetish elite. The party is held the first Sunday of every month, at the Alphabet Lounge (Avenue C at 7th Street). Doors open at 8pm and performances begin at 10pm. There is no dress code, but The Baroness encourages an attractive, well-dressed crowd by rewarding those who look absolutely fabulous with free admission. For the rest it's $5 in fetish attire, $15 in all black, and $20 if you're in lowly street wear.
