Le Bateau Ivre is a lot more than just a midtown favorite; it is a little known romantic restaurant with a superior wine list and French food. Le Bateau Ivre is a wine bar and does not have a full bar selection, so if you are a cocktail drinker, you will have to go elsewhere. For wine lovers, however, this is the place to be.
In warmer weather, Le Bateau Ivre opens its front windows and creates an elegant and hospitable setting. The city's energy and lights become part of your dining experience. If your date is just for drinks, then make sure to get there before 6 pm, or after 10 pm, especially on popular happy hour nights - Wednesday – Friday - if you want to be guaranteed a table in the bar section. Otherwise, you'll have to stand in the small and often crowded front bar. The wine, however, will help to alleviate the burden on your feet.
Although I recommend coming to Le Bateau Ivre on dates, like some NYC restaurants, the dining room is cramped and tables are close to each other. If you are interested in keeping your conversations more private, then try Brasserie (see review in this section – Romantic Dining) where the layout is more spacious. Here, you are close enough to the next table to be a part of their conversation too. If these things don't bother you, then the wine selection, delicious French food, and romantic lighting will guarantee to impress your date.
