I love Chef Tom Colicchio. He's one of those men who appears to have a gentle personality yet is rough - in a good way - in bed. This is why it pains me to bash his restaurant, Craftbar. Craftbar is a good date restaurant if you're looking for dim lighting, a dramatically high ceiling and a spacious dining room. On a recent Thursday night, I saw many couples having dinner, so, clearly, New Yorkers enjoy dining at Craftbar. Still, the food is disappointing. I might be tempted to return to Craftbar when I think of the beautiful interior and superior service, but when I'm reminded that the Beef Sirloin with shitake mushrooms, onions and potato puree I ordered "medium" came raw and that there were literally two or three tiny pieces of mushrooms and two tablespoons of potato puree on my plate, I would go elsewhere. At $26, this Beef Sirloin may not be the most expensive steak in town, but, for that price, I think I am entitled to get more than three slices of meat on my plate. The website describes the pasta dishes as hearty, but, if the pasta dishes resemble the other entrees in any way, then the word, "hearty" is definitely being misused. If you're on a date, I do recommend going to the bar at Craftbar for a glass of wine from their very extensive wine list or even a cocktail - I like the craft cocktail (Belevedere Vodka, Blackberry Sage Tea & Lemon) - but I do not recommend going for dinner, at least not until the food improves. The food at Craftbar just doesn't meet the standard you would expect from Tom Colicchio.
Tom, if you're reading this, I hope this doesn't ruin our love affair...
