  • You may know Café Noir from the steamy bathroom sex scene in the movie, Unfaithful, or the diverse crowd of French speakers who seem to mingle in the bar area almost every night. Whether you’re a Francophile or just looking for a date place, this hip restaurant/bar in Soho should be put on your top five list of romantic NYC hotspots. Café Noir is also perfect for celebrating birthdays and starting a bachelor/bachelorette party with friends as the tables in the back can be arranged to accommodate large parties.

I met my date at the bar and found two chairs by the front window while we waited for our table. Unless you meet your date before 7 pm, be prepared to stand at the bar because the tables and bar stools go fast (in warmer weather, the windows in the bar area open, so lingering at the bar is worthwhile). After a short wait, the friendly staff showed us to a table in the bar section. While sitting in the bar area in the front is conducive to people watching, on this particular Saturday night, it was impossible to hear each other above the loud (but great) world music being spun by the DJ. For a quieter experience, ask for a table in the back.

Everything on the Mediterranean-inspired menu is worth trying, and the tapas menu offers that opportunity. My date and I had the Tartare trio (tuna, salmon, and beef tartare with French fries), avocado hummus, and the lamb brochettes. We were licking our fingers with each morsel. The pitchers of red sangria we ordered with the tapas were a little too sweet, but still accompanied the texture and flavors of the tapas very well (their cocktails also go well with the tapas). After many glasses of sangria and emboldened by the dark, sexy lighting, my date and I were eager to take our tapas and sangria induced lust to a more intimate setting. In case you seek more drinks after dinner, go to the bar at either the Thompson Hotel (60 Thompson Street between Spring and Broome streets) or the Soho Grand Hotel (310 West Broadway between Grand and Canal streets), both of which are within 2-3 short blocks of Café Noir. My date and I skipped the hotel bars and went straight to his apartment to finish what we had started at the restaurant.
