I have had countless first dates at the Brasserie, so if you follow my advice, I can almost guarantee that your first date will lead to a second, a goodnight kiss, and maybe more…
Don’t be deceived by the nondescript awning and revolving door that fronts this hip and ultramodern French restaurant in midtown, redesigned by uber-cool architecture firm, Diller & Scofidio. The interior is light and cavernous and perfect for a grand entrance, so make sure to look hot. Don’t forget to smile as you walk in, as the sensor at the door triggers a video snapshot that can be seen on monitors above the bar, in case your date is waiting for you there. Then, prepare to descend the plank like staircase into the main dining room with a confident walk and straight into the arms of your date.
The main dining room resembles a huge honeycomb, but its size belies an intimate date experience. Ask or make reservations to be seated in one of the few private booths. Regardless of where you sit, don’t forget to ask for a large table to accommodate the most succulent and lustful seafood experience you’ll ever have in the city.
The Brasserie’s menu offers wonderful French brasserie cooking, but the real reason to go to the Brasserie, in addition to dining in its award-winning interior, is to order the Le Grand Seafood Platter, a bottle of wine from their extensive wine list, and a few side dishes (pommes frites and sautéed mushrooms highly recommended). You might be tempted to order something else, but save those orders for when you return with co-workers, friends, or family members.
The Le Grand Seafood Platter offers a three-tier assortment of jumbo shrimp, crabmeat, crayfish, mussels, ceviche, and raw clams and oysters (unfortunately, the large pieces of lobster have fallen victim to the economic crisis and are no longer served on the platter.) Do order the Le Grand even if you’re only two people. The size may look overwhelming, but you will eat it all, I promise. The seafood is not only delicious, but the platter is a beautiful sight when it’s presented at your table. This is when having a large table will come in handy because I recommend asking the waiter to spread the layers down on the table or at least remove the ceviche served in martini glasses that are otherwise permanently embedded in the ice and impossible to remove without assistance.
Now begins the most romantic date you’ll ever have because it’s all about feeding each other and letting your fingers stray slightly in your date’s mouth. It will take at least an hour to go through the platter and you’ll be touching and licking each other’s fingers throughout dinner. Serve your date an oyster from your side of the platter or offer your date some shrimp topped with one of the three delicious sauces that accompany the platter. This experience is more than just feeding your date; it’s about creating intimacy and a yearning for something more to follow the date. As I said, if you follow this culinary outline, I can almost guarantee that your date will end with pleasures of the sexual kind.
