  • I have a soft spot for Balthazar in my heart, as my best friend got engaged there. I do remain surprised, however, that despite some great experiences, NYC'ers and visitors aren't becoming increasingly disenchanted with Balthazar's velvet-rope attitude, steep prices and long wait (one hour or more) at the bar for a table (having dinner at Balthazar requires forethought and a reservation). I don't want to be a naysayer, so I will focus on the great aspects of Balthazar - it's food. Despite offering French fare, there is a menu to suite every taste level and time of meal - breakfast, brunch, lunch, dinner, and even after hours dining. At Balthazar, I indulge my love for escargot and steak au poivre, both prepared the classic French way - simple and flavorful. Add a bottle of red wine from their extensive menu, and dinner at Balthazar is a gastronomic treat. Balthazar is also a "scene" that attracts a beautiful and well-heeled international crowd. Balthazar does offer a transporting experience, so that it's possible to feel like you're in Paris while dining in the heart of Soho in New York. Dining at Balthazar can feel romantic. You have been forewarned, though, that the experience can be a little daunting in the ways I described, but if dining in NYC has built up your tolerance and immunity to a snotty waitstaff and expensive prices, you'll love Balthazar.
