My New Philosophy
Yesterday afternoon, I finally closed the cover on "Going Rouge: Sarah Palin - An American Nightmare." Not being a super politically minded person, I
found the experience to be incredibly stimulating.
Naturally, I abhor the very ground Sarah Palin walks on, because - let's be honest - if she had her way, I'd probably be dead. The woman goes against everything I believe in: she cares nothing for the environment, she barely sees homosexuals as human beings, she thinks church and state go hand-in-hand, she seeks to strip her own sex of their rights to their own
bodies, and she believes that abstinence-only sex education is the only effective method.
While my past two weeks with this book have filled me with rage and disbelief, it has also inspired me to analyze my own beliefs surrounding sexuality. I've always had my thoughts about sex, mainly that I liked it, but never thought of it from a a political or philosophical standpoint.
I grew up in a relatively conservative city in Michigan. It was hard to tell which way the city really leaned; the conservatives were more plentiful, but the liberals were louder, so in some ways it evened out.
I had trouble embracing my own sexuality at the beginning. I received a very healthy sex education, and my parents were fairly sex-positive people. Yet, somehow, my friends were all very religious and made me feel very dirty.
Thank God I escaped to New York, where I learned that it was perfectly acceptable to exercise your naughty desires, as long as you did so safely. After a couple of years in the vanilla zone, I learned about more creative ways to express myself. After much study and practice, I consider myself to be a sort of...sexual connoisseur .
My philosophy is this:
Your sexual appetite is just like your normal appetite. Sex is just another one of your body's many needs. Denying your sex drive is just another form of fasting, which may be appropriate on certain occasions, but can do you serious damage in the long run. The act of intercourse is healthy and natural, and depriving yourself of that pleasure may be painful one day.
Sex does your body good. And hopefully, someone else's too!
