Tristan Taormino is a columnist for the Village Voice, editor-at-large for On Our Backs, series editor of the annual Best Lesbian Erotica anthology, lecturer and sex educator, double tee, "TT", as she signs her emails, is quite busy. Current projects include the second installment of her best-selling and critically acclaimed Tristan Taormino's Ultimate Guide to Anal Sex, both the book and the video, several anthologies, and a secret deal with a cable network. TT has been known to take to the road for months at a time promoting her work.
Taormino cites Susie Bright, Patrick Califia-Rice, Annie Sprinkle, Carol Queen, and Betty Dodson as major influences. She says their writings and involvement with alternative sex education and sex-positive lesbian activism have helped her forge a career as a sexpert, an option that was not easily available to women when she was growing up in the 1980s.
Taormino graduated with honors from Wesleyan University. Her undergraduate thesis focused on butch-femme sexual dynamics and made substantial references to both porn and S/M. Although TT contemplated attending law school (to continue her radical lesbian and gay activism), her school counselor told her to write about sex instead. And who says guidance counselors are useless?
Today, TT lives quietly in Brooklyn with Red, her lover, and their two dogs, Reggie and Jordan. On the day of our interview, Taormino was waiting for the plumber in the fixer-upper she and Red bought in 2000, and she resembled any other homeowner. But this girl is different. She maintains an open relationship and is an equal opportunity lover. "I sleep with people of all genders. Please do not write both genders, because there is a range."
