  • Snaking your way up the dimly lit, rectum-like stairwell of the Body Archive Gallery, you might be tempted to turn back, what with ominous candles and warning signs lining the way. But don't, because this establishment offers ties that bind - and gag - and much, much more.

Founded by renowned body modifier Matty Jankowski and now under the direction of photographer, Steven Speliotis, the Body Archive Gallery is a combined research center, library, gift shop, and spectacle. A book-burning fanatic would have a field day here. The Archive offers books and magazines about (deep breath) tattooing, piercing, body modification, branding, scarification, blood play, fetish, S&M and B&D, mehandi/henna, and body painting. Also for sale are custom and ethnic body jewelry, clothing, hard-core dishware, tickle videos, records, whips, you name it! If it's about sex, it's here at the Body Archive.

The Archive sponsors lectures, stages live performances (join the free e-mail list to receive invitations to special events and performances), and offers consulting services. It's a great place to browse, ogle, and go home with something to hang over a fireplace, like an 18th-century body harness.

The Archive is for everyone, including: closet deviants hoping to uncover some new ways to please - or tease - their partner (or themselves); cultural anthropologists researching the history of body modification; human sexuality educators needing to brush up on the latest sex practices and trends; and dominatrices needing advice on preparing a master-slave contract.

When I asked Matty to show me something really shocking, he reached for a book on the history of enemas. (Wait a minute, that goes where? And does what?) Yup, there's plenty to see in this small, stimulating space (a larger space is in Florida), so swing by the Body Archive to learn something new.
