Looking for the latest issue of On Our Backs? Missed an episode of Dyke TV? Then high-tail it to Blue Stockings, a small, radical bookstore and cafe that carries an inspired selection of female erotica, whether you take it lesbian, straight, or twisted. Named for the 18th-century women's literary society, Bluestockings opened in 1999 and is staffed almost entirely by volunteers. Most of the stock focuses on political and sexual issues, but there is also a collection of fiction, poetry, and non-fiction that you won't find anywhere else, such as Faster Pussycats by Trixi ($12.95), a chronicle of hot lesbian nightlife; Gynomite: Fearless, Feminist Porn edited by Liz Belile ($14.95); and Femalia, a collection of photography edited by Joani Blank that reveals the shocking truth that not all vaginas look alike.
Relax. The women running this bookstore are friendly and interesting and the atmosphere is comfortable, with flea-market couches and chairs for lounging and even a line of stools at the counter. Get a cup of coffee and a Revolution Bar, have a seat, and thumb through the latest issues of Transgender Tapestry or Lesbian Connection. You can also pick up some handy gift items, such as the Girls First Period Kit or a SuperDyke T-shirt.
Bluestockings sponsors a Lower East Side women's book group, as well as readings and lectures on a wide variety of topics. Here you can prop The Whole Lesbian Sex Book by Felice Newman ($21.95) on your lap without feeling an ounce of embarrassment, try that in Barnes & Noble, and if you're lucky, you just might pick up a nice Jewish girl to bring home to your mother.
