Erotic Art - Perversion or Perspective?

Send to a Friend

Greetings to All You Good People!

I am The Luscious Magdeleine. In some realms, I am known as The Magdeleine – as in The Domain of The Baroness, New York's premiere designer of elegant, provocative latex fashions. In other realms, as a burlesque dancer/performance artist, I am called Luscious Magdeleine. In any case, truly, I am nearly always Luscious, often heretical, and coming from a catholic upbringing that is, of course, wrought with paradox and, therefore, fodder for all manner of revolution.

Like charity, revolution begins at home. So, let's go!! Every act of effrontery to the boundaries of "polite" society - when sparked by TRUTH and not fear - is an act of revolution.

With this statement, I invite you to join me as I embark upon an exploration in these next several weeks (on a bi-monthly basis) on the issue of Erotic Art Versus Pornography.

My main source of employment is as a nude model for artists. Well - sometimes I am clothed partially or even entirely, but most of the time, I model nude. Recently, I was told, by someone who had known me for six years and whom I had considered a friend, that certain photographs of mine on an online social network were pornographic, which they, categorically, are not. To be clear - I have photographs in my port that could be considered pornographic, but these particular photographs that were labeled as pornographic were absolutely not pornographic at all. And this has made me all the more impassioned concerning the rampant and sanctimonious misfiring, all over the damned place, of people's so-called morality. In fact, it causes me to call into question the essence of perversion and perspective.

After the initial shock of this accusation, along with the loss of what I had thought was a friendship, I came to wonder how the eyes and mind of this woman could perceive “pornography” in those photographs. There are no naughty nipples or genitalia displayed and sexual situation being enacted or implied. So - who's the "pervert" exactly?

This and many more questions will be asked and possibly answered in the ensuing weeks. But, let's face it, often times deeper meaning can be found in the questioning. In the meantime, I leave you with my appropriation of a quote from one of my heroes, Gandhi: Be the revolution you wish to see in the world.

Until next time...
