I walked past the red-velvet drapes of the Slipper Room at 167 Orchard Street to hear the erotic and violent strummings of Vulgaras. Led by soulful and talented vocalist Velocity Chlaydd, the Vulagaras combine goth, metal, blues, and grindcore, and deliver an original, dark, and sexually-charged performance.
Vulgaras lyrics describe angry and profoundly disturbing images. When Velocity Chlaydd yells “you fucking whore,” you feel the pain and brutality of her experiences. Vulgaras challenge the listener to redefine female sexual empowerment. In our conversation after the show, Velocity Chlaydd told me that no woman, not even a whore, should be judged for her sexuality. Her bandmates joined her in challenging the existing morés of female sexuality, especially transgendered drummer, Goddess Diana, who creates powerful rhythms that reveal a survivalist female spirit. While Vuglaras’ dark and vulgar performance disturbs the senses, it ultimately entertains with provocation.
Vulgaras wasn’t the only attraction at the Slipper Room that night. There was also the monthly gathering of the Court of Lazarus, a subculture of opulently dressed, fang-wearing vampires. And the opening acts for the Vulgaras included a lengthy Thelemic ceremony marking the spring equinox, led by Enrico, the Court Heirophant, who, wielding a long sword, chanted incantations to the so-called bornless one and cursed Jesus and all other monotheistic prophets. As if that weren’t enough, Victor Noirlocke’s, Razor Seduction: A Close Shave on the Fetish Side, followed. Real razor in hand, Victor, a tall, imposing character, tied his lovely female victim to a chair with her legs spread open, smeared a frothy cream on her crotch and you can guess the rest. Yes, it was just another ordinary night out in New York City.
