Michelle “Shells” Hoffman is sexy, self-deprecating, delusional, and uber-entertaining. Performing in her monthly cabaret show, she’s a “super successful analyst” at JP Morgan Chase who confides to the audience her sad, yet strangely, hopeful life and loves as a single woman about town. She tells engaging tales, sings songs of angst, and downs a bottle of (real?) red wine during each performance. She’s also hot and wears short skirts. No wonder New Yorkers flock to her show each month and keep coming back. Each performance includes audience participation and is not complete without at least one audience member calling her an idiot.
I went to see the “Shells Halloween Spectacular”. Although Hoffman performs a one-woman show, she was joined on stage by two lovely sidekicks, including Erotic New York’s newest, esteemed writer, Cas Marino, dressed in drag (for more about Cas, read his blogs in Voyeur’s Sex Lounge) . For those who have never seen Cas in super tight black leggings and a sexy corset, it is a gorgeous sight to behold. As for Hoffman, continuing the tale of her “relationship” with Scott, she discusses the ethics of telling Scott that she is pregnant when she is not. Marino and the other lovely sidekick express their disgust and want her to come clean. She lashes out serious attacks on Marino. Clearly a man dressing as a woman has more issues than she. This part of the show made me feel uncomfortable, but this is what makes the show so successful. Everything seems so real – Hoffman, Scott, her neuroses, her day job at a top firm, when, in fact, it’s the brainchild of writer and actor, Roslyn Hart. I left the show asking my friend how Hoffman finds the time to do these monthly performances and still be a “super successful” analyst by day. It seems like improv, but it’s live theater at its best.
