  • Opening to the lilting rhythms of “Thank Heaven for Jewish Girls,” a Semitic take on the Maurice Chevalier classic, the Big Apple’s all-Jewish burlesque revue set the tone for the evening’s Purim celebration at Mo Pitkin’s, one of downtown’s hipster Hebrew hangouts. Founded in 2004 and hosted by co-creator Raven Snook and Allison Tilsen, Kosher ChiXXX is short on the stereotype of the Jewish woman as mother figure and long on big bosoms and throaty stage numbers performed by a corps of Tribe members dedicated to the preservation of this sexy art form with a dash of Yiddish nostalgia.

If you think a busty Jewish woman in pasties and fishnets is as sexy as gefilte fish on Passover, then you will be left speechless by Little Brooklyn’s energized rendition of “How to Strip for Your Husband.” Husbands take note—this little striptease might make you reconsider your vows. As the crowd downed HeBrews (kosher beer) and popped stale Hamentashen (Purim cookies) like Prozac at a teen prom, the intoxicating mix of flesh and booze rolled out the blue and white carpet for performers with vixenish stage personas like Minnie Tonka (co-creator Alyssa Abrahamson) and Darlinda Just Darlinda (aka “The Shlep Sisters”). Intermingled with provocative commentary from the bodacious hosts, the event strutted from classic numbers like Minnie the Moocher to a novel take on an old Purim tradition—a Jewish lesbian costume contest.

What is even more astonishing than the number of Jewish burlesque performers in this troupe who hail from Minnesota is the reason why co-founder Raven Snook thinks people dig the show’s erotic shtick: “Jews feel clean watching kosher meat on stage.” But even though you won’t find any treyf ladies shaking their rumps on stage, you don’t have to light the Menorah to enjoy this irreverent piece of New York showmanship. With humor and sass, Kosher ChiXXX defy stereotypes by proving there are some Jewish girls out there you definitely would NOT want to introduce to your mother.
