Crimson Boudoir has years of professional dance and burlesque experience under her belt and provides her clients with a down-to-earth demonstration of her talents at the beginning of each class. Her artistic training is evident in her moves. For example, during our session, she produced a rose bud from her brassiere and showered us with petals. Her performance is real and passionate. But our impression was that Crimson teaches primarily because she wants her students to be self-empowered.
Classes are by appointment only and take place in Crimson’s crimson-colored living room. The lights are dimmed and a yellow glow is cast from the chandelier in the adjoining dining room. Ours began with a quick costume change. Crimson gave us prior instruction as to what to bring: a dress with a zipper in the back and a pretty bra and panty set. Layers are required to prolong the act of seduction. But the hostess has no problem letting anyone raid her clothing racks.
Each client is asked to choose her own music and perform a burlesque act. She must tease an imaginary audience, which, to be sure, can be daunting. But Crimson makes the task a little easier by stressing the creation of a character. Aided by our clothes, music, and props, we fell seamlessly into our chosen roles. The result was an improvised routine that unleashed the wicked, wild performer within us. Although some moments were extremely awkward: I got tangled up in my boa at one point, the overall act was poised, as if lured out by an unconscious force, as well as by Crimson, who reinforced every saucy, slinky move, and reminded us to engage the audience. We became lost in the dance, unaware of the world outside the room.
Overall the environment is real and raw. Regardless, this is a pretty good excuse to take your clothes off in the middle of a Crimson Bourdoir's living room, something everyone must do at least once in their lives, whether or not it brings you self-empowerment.
