Max Brenner's Chocolate makes for a surprisingly sensual, subtle erotic experience. The East Village restaurant/store offers an array of chocolate goodies including hot chocolates, aphrodisiac alcohol drinks featuring chocolate, desserts, fondues and s'mores as well as more savory items such as sandwiches and salads. By day, you will often see tourists and families gobbling down chocolate pizzas, banana splits and other wholesome treats. At 7:30 the lights go down and "indulging your senses," (Max's motto) takes a sultrier tone.
After a full inspection of the extensive menu, my date and I ordered two hot chocolates (spicy Mexican and melted marshmallow) and the shared tasting plate. The tasting plate featured Max's most popular desserts including a waffle topped with banana and chocolate, a silky truffle-like peanut butter chocolate snack and a dessert made of pop rocks and chocolate that sizzled on our tongues and crackled in our mouths. Best of all were the chocolate fondue heated by a small candle and the mini-campfire flame over which we could toast marshmallows and warm bananas and strawberries to dip in the fondue. The presentation was a mix of elegant and playful which definitely set the tone.
We took turns fixing treats and feeding them to each other across the table from long, bifurcated forks. Playful, messy chocolate foreplay turned langorous as we filled each other up and engaged in ever more suggestive banter. At one point during the evening, my date admitted he was "quite surprised" that we were "probably more turned on by this chocolate" than by the usual after dinner experience at a bar. I could not disagree. Energized by the chocolate we went home to further indulge our senses….
