Rene has been a fixture of the New York art scene for decades, known for his Muhammed Ali-esque tagline, "I Am the Best Artist," and for site-specific "events" at the Museum of Modern Art, which take aim at what he perceives to be the hypocrisy and commercial nature of the art establishment.
The focus of his work is primarily the vulva, which he carves in wood, paints in oils and acrylics, sculpts in clay, and draws using various media. Rene believes the image of the vulva is sacred, and frequently renders it at the center of the cross and on mythical landscapes. He celebrates a part of the human anatomy that has been vilified for centuries, and yet is what he considers to be "the seat of all human creativity." And after listening to Rene expound his philosophy of art and sexuality, the depth of meaning in his work-which projects a unique transcendent beauty-becomes even more apparent than at first glance.
