Nancy Drew - not to be confused with the fictional sleuth - is an Brooklyn-based artist. Her work entitled, Porn Series 1 and Porn Series 2 - is a colorful and intriguing collection of erotic art. Nancy uses an innovative method - most of her paintings are made of flock and glitter on canvas. For those of us who don't know what flock is, it's the soft, fuzzy stuff you find on certain wallpapers and the lining of jewelry boxes. She applies tiny fibers of colored flock to an adhesive surface electrostatically, creating a velvety and tactile brush finish. She also uses a variety of glitter ranging in size from fine powders to super-chunky, octagonal pieces. The total effect is colorful and mesmerizing. Her paintings are also contemporary, beautiful and provocative. Similar to her other collections, Nancy shows familiar scenes and themes in unexpected ways. My favorite pieces - Sweet and Easy 1-5 - showcase various "smutty" magazine covers; each painting contains similar elements from these covers but have a different backdrop. As one friend describes, "Same same, but very different."
