With a body of work that spans over a decade, Michele Serchuk has
created a unique and intimate aesthetic founded upon the examination of sensuality through erotic portraiture. Michele prefers working with real women rather than models in her personal artwork-women who have a positive relationship to their image and sexuality. Her range of visual erotica expands beyond the limited language of gesture in porn, working with women who are very aware of themselves as visual creatures. Michele also works with couples, exploring the emotional experience of their relationship. She is striving to find the portrait of the erotic self in her work.
Currently a Photography Associate for On Our Backs magazine, Michele has also been a featured photographer in the Mammoth Book of Illustrated Erotica, Photo Sex, and the On Our Backs Guide to Lesbian Sex. Her photos have also been published in Cupido, Penthouse, SECRET, Girlfriends, Prometheus, The Spectator, and Marquis, and as cover art on books by Cleis Press, Circlet Press, St. Martin's Press, Alyson Books, Virgin Books, Masquerade, The Feminist Press, and Haworth Press. Michele has had solo exhibitions at MBM Gallery and Purple Passion/DV8 in New York City, and has participated in group shows at Scott Pfaffman Gallery, Greeley Square Gallery, Golin-Harris International's Face Value exhibit, Art @ Large Gallery, and Sacred Body Art Gallery in New York City. She's also shown at Mark Chester's SexArt5 and Good Vibrations Photo Sex exhibit in San Francisco , and participated in Chicago's Around the Coyote Festival in tandem with Feitico Gallery in 2000 and 2001. Her prints can be purchased at the Art @ Large gallery and Purple Passion/DV8 (211 West 20th St, New York, NY 10011, 212.807.0486)
Michele follows the lead of her subjects as they take her on a journey into their interior sexual landscape. Personal projects may encompass several sittings, allowing the subject's visual persona to evolve. Michele views her work as a collaboration between photographer and subject, with active participation as the subject reveals her/his fantasies. There is an understanding between artist and subject that photography is a safe space in which to explore. The photo sessions can be theater, with the fantasy dissolving when the shoot ends, or they can be portraiture, with the images being reflective of the subject's erotic identity.
Michele is available for commissioned work.
