A professional painter and sculptor for 30 years, Berkowitz's work has been exhibited in many museums and private galleries throughout the country. But this artist has also been taking photographs for several years, work that he has not exhibited until recently.
Winner of the 2001 New York Camera Club Award, Berkowitz now devotes most of his creative energy to photographing the nude female form. He draws much of his inspiration from French erotic photography, as well as E. J. Bellocq's portraits of prostitutes in early 20th-century New Orleans-later known as the Storyville portraits.
He aims to capture the sensual female form of the "real" women that surround us-fake breasts and model-slim bodies don't especially interest him. On the other hand, breasts that are too small or a butt that is too large by society's standards are the imperfections that Berkowitz believes creates the beauty of a woman. He finds his own personal idea of beauty within each model and then attempts to capture that beauty on film.
Berkowitz's photos are as much about portraiture and each model's particularity as they are about the nude human figure. Although the photos might be considered erotic by some, ultimately the images are simply about form and beauty. Each photograph presents a heightened, almost surreal level of detail and texture. The model is typically shot in a stylized, fantasy bedroom evocative of the 1920s.
