New York-based Melissa Ulto is a self-described interdisciplinary artist-poet, videographer, photographer, painter, and writer-responsible for this online exhibit of sexually charged digital images. More suggestive than explicit, more R-rated than NC-17, Ms. Ulto's photos draw on B-movies and pulp fiction filtered through the lens of cyber culture (it's a collection, clearly, that benefits from the immediacy and changeability of its Internet environment). With subtitles like "the dreaded red head," "pink aphrodite," "girlfriends," "sugar," "fair addiction" (in which both Marilyn Monroe and Tippi Hedren are evoked), and "platinum," Ms. Ulto's work portrays women (and a few men) in a variety of states of dress and emotion: lounging in lingerie, stretched catlike on a pile of unmade linens, eyes rimmed with kohl and lips lusciously stained. Interestingly, all of her subjects seem aware they're being watched-many of them address the camera directly-which affords the viewer something of a personal connection with each image. Ms. Ulto's brief, verse captions serve as dialogue for unMade Movie, and thankfully, the "film" suggests it's far from finished. We eagerly await the next installment.
