  • Leslie/Lohman Gay Art Foundation Gallery located on 26 Wooster, was established in 1990 to provide an outlet for art work that is unambiguously gay and that is frequently denied access to mainstream venues. The gallery is an elegant haven from the bustle of Canal street a block east. During our visit, the gallery featured a show of great fashion artists. Apparently "this is not a typical show" for Leslie/Lohman and we were given a tour of the "back room" by the Director of Operations Rob Hugh Rosen so we could see art more typical of the gallery's offerings.

There is no question that this art has a gay sensibility. There were plenty of artful, well-built, well-endowed men to be found in an extensive variety of genres and eras. The collection is quite eclectic and includes items from the permanent collection as well as art the gallery sells on consignment. In the back room were erotic Victorian prints, paintings of gay men painted by lesbians, a painting from the 60's featuring an androgynous man who could pass for Fabio's younger brother. Most notable was a cast iron set of penises hanging in the door way that went from flaccid to erect. One of our party nearly poked her eye out on this piece de resistance erection.

While the gallery's webpage is chock-full of Leslie/Lohman's holdings (www.leslielohman.org), if you are a gay man with a taste for art, run, don't walk, to Leslie/Lohman. Your best bet is to make an appointment with the endlessly knowledgeable and helpful Rob Hugh Rosen to ensure you can get a full tour of the back room, the land of 1000 hot naked men.
