You won't find "hot" baked goods at Erotics Gallery, but be assured of other sweet finds at the city's premier dealer in adult artifacts. Erotics Gallery hit the web a few years ago, but a trek to its Union Square digs may still be in order.
Solow, a transplanted Oklahoman with plainspoken charm, gives good chat (particularly if you're punctual in keeping your appointment). Samples from her international collection, which she started amassing with her former husband in the mid-70s, are there for the viewing. The fornicating frogs always get a reaction from first-time guests to her gallery-cum-office, a pleasant, unpretentious space for connoisseurs of the carnal.
Suggestively shaped jewelry ("fun, not functional") is her latest passion. Flipping through her catalogs, you find an array of articles, from erotically carved meerschaum pipes and walking sticks to porn posters and beautifully stylized prints depicting all varieties of passion. Prices range from $20 to what Solow calls "unmentionable." Credit card purchases may be made through the website, which features a "cybercatalog" spanning three centuries of adults-only art. You can also join "The Back Room," an online "inner sanctum of erotic treasures," for $10 per three months.
Perched above Union Square, Erotics Gallery began as a shop on Christopher Street in 1975. Customer interest energized its development, says Solow, noting, It's a constant work in progress. The concept was so new back then that no one knew what to make of it, not even myself, but now the sale of erotic art is normal to me. It's all about play and fantasy, and the gallery does respond to what customers want. So there are no cakes here (and no photography, either: That's a whole other realm, says Edie), but there are plenty of other goodies to sink your teeth into.
