I try not to assume anything about anyone, and Carolyn Weltman is a perfect example as to why I don't. This petite, soft-spoken Brit with an Anne Rice haircut and piercing blue eyes sees sexuality in movement and the human body. She's a self-taught artist in her 50s who began producing her art just over five years ago. She readily admits to have started masturbating at the tender age of three "because I liked it and no one told me not to do it." Not a typical English woman.
Her erotic art depicts a wide range of subjects including fellatio, nudes, women in lingerie, bondage, fetishes, homosexuality, pregnancy, and even a hermaphrodite. All the work is very sensual with great attention to form. The splashes of color most definitely grabbed my attention. And yes, that was a penis I saw bound in rope.
Weltman is a regular vendor, weather permitting, on the corner of Greene and Prince Streets in Soho from Friday to Sunday. She's proclaimed herself the "queen of the block." I loitered by her table one afternoon and watched as people would giggle, stare in disbelief, study a certain pose, or buy a few naughty notecards.
What makes these pictures so erotic are not only the poses, but the absence of faces, which adds a certain degree of mystery. Weltman says that women don't feel threatened by her work, while men enjoy fantasizing about the faceless models, who they convert into the women of their dreams.
At Weltman's studio apartment I sipped a ginger beer while surrounded by sounds of Indian-inspired music and some of her favorite art, which adorned her walls. On an easel was a painting of a threesome that the artist had been working on for quite some time. Weltman demonstrated her unique technique for me. She first sketches her models then scans the sketch, printing it out on papers of various textures. She continues to manipulate the image through multiple scans, electronically adding shadows or color until she reaches the desired look.
Weltman, whose work is displayed at galleries like Art @ Large in Manhattan, has more than 50 prints available for purchase. I was especially drawn to her commissioned work for Penthouse called "Oh, Baby," which accompanied a story on fluff girls. Weltman also does commissions (mainly of couples) beginning at $1,500. The process takes about four to six weeks and generally requires two to three sessions; models must be at least 21 years old. Print prices range from $20 for a 4" x 6" piece to $100 for a 13" x 19" piece.
