The Rubin Museum of Art (RMA) is a jewel. Featuring a small, yet comprehensive collection of art from the Himalayas and surrounding regions, and an interesting variety of public programming, the RMA offers exceptional Himalayan art, from paintings, sculptures, and textiles, from the last seven centuries. The RMA is visual stimulating, yet, did you know that the RMA also has a vibrant bar scene on Fridays nights? Regulars like to keep this a secret, but “Friday Nights at K2 Lounge” are always a blast. K2 Lounge is located in the lobby, adjacent to the gift shop. It’s a large space with dim lighting and Asian art. Get there early to get a table, especially if you’re going to be a big group. Otherwise, you can still enjoy the special drinks, mingling by the bar (happy hour starts at 6 pm). Despite the crowds, K2 Lounge never gets uncomfortably crowded or noisy which is why it’s perfect for a date or a big group. Further, the opportunity to meet cute gay men is very high here. In fact, on one recent Friday night, I met a group of young gay male dancers in their 20s out for a fun night after the day’s rehearsals. The choreographer, Sam, was especially cute. Some drinking and flirting led to kissing and an exchange of phone numbers. We made a date to meet the following Friday, again at the K2 Lounge, to have drinks, listen to a band (there is live music on most Fridays), tour the museum’s galleries (free after 7 pm) and then catch a film at the RMA cinema downstairs (films start at 9:30 p.m. and is free with a $7 bar minimum). In fact, the RMA is a great place for a date because you can have drinks, order food at K2 lounge or at the cinema, watch a film, see some fantastic art, and get to know each other in a casual environment, all without leaving the museum. Sadly, my cute choreographer went back to Japan, but my friends and I go to K2 Lounge at least once a month to hang out, unwind, and meet more cute boys.
