  • Newmindspace started off as a grassroots initiative to bring innovative and interactive activities to large cities. Since 2005, it has grown into a worldwide cultural phenomenon. Among its goals, Newmindspace wants to replace "passive, non-social, branded consumption experiences like watching television" with unique public events that spread "urban bliss" to a global community of participants. Newmindspace organizes free, non-commercial public events like its annual pillow fight in NYC (and simultaneously in Paris and Toronto) where thousands gather in Union Square on the first Saturday in April for a giant pillow fight and one of the most fun times to be experienced in NYC. You're encouraged to be creative with your pillows (or teddy bears, if that's your instrument of choice) and costumes. It's simple play time, but maximum fun. You have the opportunity to meet lots of people and enjoy being part of a unique social event.

Throughout the year, they organize other events, including "blanket forts" - participants gather at a private loft to build fortresses made out of blankets and pillows; "capture the flag" - an massive urban game played in Williamsburg, Brooklyn where teams hide flags in their territory and attempt to capture the enemy flag using buses, taxis, bicycles, longboards or their own two feet; and "bubble bath" - blowing bubbles in Times Square with thousands of others.

On Valentine's Day, dozens of volunteers painted thousands of hearts on the sidewalks of SoHo. How fun!
