One of the coolest things you can do on a Saturday afternoon in NYC is go on a murder mystery scavenger hunt at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, located at 1000 Fifth Avenue at 82nd Street, http://www.metmuseum.org/.
Called Murder at the Met, these hunts are organized by a fun group of people at Watson Adventures for about $42 per person, including admission to the museum. It may sound cheesy, but it's a challenging event that requires analytical skills, comfortable shoes, and friendly competition. Throw in the opportunity to meet and mingle with other team members, and you have the makings of a fun afternoon in the city.
My three friends and I formed a team and were ready to take on the 10-15 other teams of up to six people of all ages and backgrounds. Each team is given the facts of the "murder", the names of several suspects and their backgrounds, and 22 questions that had us running around the museum to find the artwork needed to solve the clues. The identity of the murderer is revealed once all the clues are answered, so it was important to get as many clues right as possible. In only a little over two hours, this is not an easy feat, unless you are willing to walk briskly and smile nicely at the guards who can provide easy direction. Once all the points (for correct answers) are tallied by Watson Adventures, the winners are announced at the Temple of Dendur where all the teams assemble at the end of the race. Looking around, I saw several cute and friendly guys. The opportunity to meet people was there, but once the winners were announced, everyone left. The museum closed at 9 pm, so there wasn't much time left to really mingle with the other team members. I would highly recommend Watson Adventure scavenger hunts for some challenging fun around the city, but if you really want to meet people, I hear the hunts with after-parties are better.
