As a twenty-something turning into a thirty-something, I started to outgrow some of my favorite bars/lounges in NYC. I still love B Bar & Grill, especially for drinks in their outdoor space on a breezy summer night, but that "scene" - loud music and cheesy conversation with kids who just graduated college - has, overall, lost it's appeal for me. Don't get me wrong. I'm not ready to end the party; I'm just looking for a new party with a more sophisticated crowd. The Hudson Hotel is now my new favorite party in town.
The Hudson Hotel has one of the most spectacular interiors of any boutique hotel in NYC; the outdoors are brought indoors with expansive skylights covered in branches and vines. The interior is dimly lit but still provides little nooks of unexpected color. Already, I'm inspired to enjoy myself simply by walking in. The Hudson Hotel also attracts a thirty-something crowd from the international set and well-heeled New Yorkers.
Start the evening with dinner at the Hudson Cafeteria. Currently, the Hudson Cafeteria is undergoing renovations, but the highlight of the old space was its long communal table where you could easily meet new people. Strangers turn into dinner companions and sometimes more: a friendly attitude and a willingness to engage someone in conversation can lead to many romantic interludes.
Following dinner - whether with friends or your new dinner companions - head to the Hudson Bar if you're looking for a lively dance environment. If this area becomes too loud and overwhelming, my favorite spot to go is the Hudson Library, complete with a pool table and refined crowd. This is the best spot to mingle over cocktails. Sometimes the crowd can be pretentious, especially if it's an international crowd more interested in being seen than being part of the scene, but after a few rounds of drinks, the friendlier ones emerge.
