- I admit that when I went to the Grapple Den Underground Wrestling Party on assignment to write this review, I thought I was going to a sex party. There might be some wrestling, I thought, but, to me, the name implied that the evening would end with some sex-play. Perhaps it does for the participants later in the evening and back in the privacy of their own homes, but the Grapple Den is actually all about the sport of wrestling, albeit in a party environment. The group meets every month in the lower level of Tagine (each month is a new, fun theme). Many of the participants are regulars, but everyone is welcomed to attend, observe and/or participate. The organizers and guests are very friendly, and those who've attended previous parties are happy to offer their insights into how the party works. If you want to participate, you can sign up with a partner or be assigned to one. The rules are read before the wrestling starts, because safety is very important to the group. Then, pairs of names are called to the mat to assume the starting position, the music is turned on - that night, it was alternative/goth/metal - and beer and cocktails (purchased upstairs at the bar) are consumed as guests watch the center mat. Points are assigned and a winner is declared after five minutes of wrestling. For wrestling enthusiasts, it's a great way to meet other wrestlers and have an opportunity to wrestle. For me, it was just fun to watch. Here, men and women can wrestle each other, and, although the Grapple Den is not at all a sex party, there is something very erotic about watching the men and women wrestle. No wrestling experience is required and everyone - all ages and sizes - are encouraged to try it. The organizers call it "New York City's Sweaty Subterranean Fight Club", but the atmosphere is really friendly and welcoming. Not knowing what to really expect, I wasn't properly attired to try the wrestling (even if I could have mustered up the courage to do it), so I sat on the couch on the edge of the center mat and chatted with several of the wrestlers, including a masked man who had been attending for several years. He was intelligent and very cute in his shorts, so I couldn't help but wonder about the face beneath the mask. I left the party feeling like I had discovered a cool new party in NYC. Next time, maybe I'll challenge the masked man to the center mat...
