Be forewarned, though: Brooklyn Boulders is full of testosterone, which is a great thing if buff, shirtless men are your thing.
Brooklyn Boulders is a 18,000-square-foot gym with rows of walls ranging from easy to literally hanging from the ceiling from the hanging stalactite - no easy feat. The floors are covered in thick matting to absorb jumps and falls, and multi-colored studs are strategically scattered across the walls as grips for climbing. Experience is not required, just a willingness to think creatively and push yourself outside of your comfort zone. For all levels of climbers, Brooklyn Boulders can easily become addictive. Don't worry if you think that you'll soon get bored by the available climbs, because the owners regularly change the positions of the studs to provide an ever-changing variety of climbs, just like a real mountain. Monthly and annual memberships are available, but a day pass is a good investment if you just want to check out the sport.
So why is Brooklyn Boulders so much fun? Although climbing is a serious and strenuous sport, the climbers and staff are friendly. Go on a Friday night, and there's a a D.J. spinning great music from on top of a 17-foot platform. You can climb with music and hang out with your date - or new friends - between climbs. Picnic tables and large sofas offer some relaxation and rest. Later, head across the street to Littlefield, a hip performance and art space, for drinks, dinner and more fun with your date.
