Veronica Vera—whose repressed, Catholic girlhood propelled her first into a career as a porn star (she’s been out of the biz for years) then writer—is a local hero of sorts. She’s taken countless transgendered men (mostly well-to-do heterosexuals), and transformed them into beautiful, confident ladies courtesy of Miss Vera’s Finishing School for Boys Who Want to Be Girls. The school has twelve deans of specialties ranging from cosmetology to high heels, and offers onsite and distance-learning classes, the latter being ideal for the timid or those living outside the city.
Miss Vera claims to have founded her school out of necessity. While writing a book, she was introduced to a male client who was interested in the art of being a woman. She subsequently advertised her "transformational" consulting services in the newspaper and when the phone began ringing off the hook decided to open the school. The school was not meant to be a parody, but rather was created to help men fulfill their transgender fantasies.
Miss Vera clearly loves what she does and has fond recollections of a number of students including Helen, whom she’s never met but has corresponded with by mail. Through Miss Vera’s tutelage, Helen has become more open with her own wife and claims to now be more content and accepting of herself. In fact, she has actually gone shopping for a new purse.
Seeing a shift in how transgendered individuals are perceived by outsiders, Miss Vera notes that it’s now "easier to take students out and about. Now people come with their entire wardrobes instead of that one hidden outfit. Now a trannie can get all sorts of clothing, have an amazing social life, and be part of an aboveground movement."
Although Miss Vera has received franchise requests, she
doesn’t currently have plans to open more schools, but would like to bring teachers to different cities and make the school’s website more interactive. And she’s recently completed a new book, Cross Dress for Success, which no doubt will be on the shelves in the near future. She’s also interested in offering a class on glamour for women (real women).
