  • The Eulenspiegel Society (pronounced "Oy-len-shpee-gull"), also known as TES, is a volunteer-run nonprofit membership organization dedicated to promoting the sexual liberation of consenting adults in the S&M scene through informational and social events. TES is open to anyone with an interest in dominant and submissive fantasies and related fetishes.

With over 1,100 members and 30 years of history, TES describes itself as the oldest and largest S&M education and support group in NYC. One of the primary concerns of TES is that it provide a safe space where the Eulenspiegel Creed and Rules of Etiquette-such as treating people with consideration and respecting the privacy of others-are followed to ensure positive play experiences.

Meetings-held every Tuesday and Wednesday-address various topics like fire and wax, caning, erotic writing, sensory deprivation, and piercing. Although there is no formal dress code, some members elect to don colorful costumes for the occasion. Both singles and couples are welcome. The doors open at 7:30pm and the program-often a lecture, demonstration, or slide show-begins at 8pm. In addition to the regularly held meetings, TES sponsors excursions to local S&M clubs. One such excursion-held specifically for novices (singles or couples)-is offered several times during the year.

TES meetings are held in an obscure theater space on West 36th Street near Madison Square Garden. This reviewer attended a basic skills workshop for novices. The presenter, with enthusiastic help from veteran members, first fed us alphabet soup: SM (sadomasochist), TB (top-bottom), DS (dominant-submissive), BD (bondage-discipline), before delving into the finer points of spanking (the best toy is your hand), paddling (watch for bruising), flogging (not on the head), and leather restraints (don't cut off their circulation, but don't let them get away, either).

Different types of paddles, including a hairbrush and ping-pong paddle, were on display, along with floggers and a single tail whip, with which our guide gave us a lashing demonstration. He encouraged attendees to peruse the wares. Two men examined and tested the paddles against their palms like wine connoisseurs assessing the merits of a pinot noir. Taking a quick, sharp swipe at my own palm with a small pliable leather paddle, under the surveillance of other S&M virgins, I felt a little thrill at my own naughtiness.

After we learned the skills and techniques with which to conduct a basic "scene," our group-a mix of men and women of varying ages-was invited to participate in a Q&A session. I asked a member to comment on one particular S&M club that I planned on visiting. He stated without reservation that as a woman going solo, I would immediately get "hit on." I assumed he meant that literally.

A one-year TES membership includes: discounts to TES parties, workshops, and meetings; discounts to local S&M clubs and S&M-related businesses, and a subscription to Prometheus, the TES quarterly magazine, with a complimentary personal ad. Members may also attend board meetings and vote for the board of directors.

The bottom line: TES members are light-hearted and friendly and not the least bit intimidating. If you're even minimally intrigued by S&M, come to a TES event. Ask some questions, learn more about the lifestyle, and then decide if you want to play. Highly recommended.
