After six years in the Flatiron District, Pandora’s Box moved to this larger Chelsea location. The new space has no windows, which seems fitting for a dungeon, and the entrance is marked with nothing more than the scripted initials PB. In the reception area—which is dimly lit and soothingly quiet—we meet Zoë, the manager on duty, who graciously explains the procedures and shows us the rooms.
Down a narrow, amber-lit hallway are two consultation rooms, both of which are furnished with large, plush chairs, and a few of the mistresses’ portfolios lying out for inspection. As we browse through the books, we come across experts in domination, forced feminization, medical play, and a variety of fetishes. Clients can choose from among 30 extremely beautiful mistresses. Next on the tour are the actual Pandora’s “boxes”—the fantasy rooms.
The Ming Palace is romantically moody, with a large gold dais at one end, an electronic suspension rig in the center, and low, cushioned platforms on either side. The many antiques play nicely against the red and gold walls. Pass through the leather, wood, and copper-studded double doors and you’ll find yourself in the Chinese torture room, which has a custom-built red and leather rack, a lacquered restraining chair, a large wheel, and a cell for “puppy” training.
In the Sanctum—a space inspired by Gothic churches—one fully expects to come face to face with members of the Spanish Inquisition. The walls are roughhewn stone lit solely by flames emanating from iron wall fixtures. Medieval torture devices, including the Katherine Wheel and the adjustable St. Andrew’s Cross, sit vacant in anticipation of their next victim. In the adjacent interrogation room, hidden microphones and cameras are poised to capture the humiliating confessions of unsuspecting submissives.
The schoolroom is stark but effective, consisting of a wooden student’s desk, a large teacher’s desk, and a chalkboard. Paddles, rather than pea jackets, hang from the coat hooks. Next door, of course, is the principal’s office—furnished in leather and dark wood paneling—where one can expect more extreme punishment.
The cross-dressing room, also known as the China Doll room, will certainly appeal to men seeking the pleasures—and pains—of corsets, heels, and lingerie. Clients can select their garb from a huge walk-in closet, and then perch at the dressing table to choose a wig and apply their makeup. Or they can lounge on the low couches—surrounded by pink murals of geishas—while trying on stilettos and pumps.
The medical room, with its hammered-steel tiled walls and metallic gray gynecologist’s table, offers the client a chance to explore a range of healthy pleasures, such as being restrained on a padded gurney or turn-of-the-century wheelchair. A glass and chrome cabinet holds a nightmarish selection of medical tools. Here, you’ll also find TENS units (these devices use electrical current to stimulate nerves), single-use medical supplies, and a private spa bathroom.
Pandora’s Box offers enough torturous treasures to last a lifetime.
