Nona is considered by some to be the meanest sadist in town. This dominatrix workaholic divides her days between holding court in her outer-borough dungeon and perfecting the HotBoxx, an innovative sex toy she conceived with an ex-partner in the mid '80s. The HotBoxx is an electronic device that can stimulate three people simultaneously. Nona officially launched the toy in 2001. All one hundred units, which she personally tested for quality control, were sold, and more are on their way.
But how did this former elementary school teacher and wife of a Jewish dentist become a professional domme, sex-toy manufacturer, S&M lecturer, and publisher of Mistress Mine magazine? First, she got a divorce ("he didn't fill my oral cavity"). But it was, she says, her father's death that changed her life. After his passing, she told herself she would simply do what she wanted to do.
And she wanted to do a lot. But because of the rampant spread of AIDS and STDs, Nona knew that she needed to find a safe way to express her sexuality. She sought out mentors to learn about the S&M scene, became a regular at the original Vault, and found she couldn't get enough of being a domme.
So she "chose the hard life," one of financial instability that is constantly vulnerable to the criticisms of others. For her, S&M and B&D is the most advanced version of sexuality-the "Picasso" of sex.
Situated just off her dining room, Nona's fully equipped dungeon features a suspension device, canes (made by an 83-year-old British man who was caned since he was six), whips (she thinks nothing of buying a $500 whip for her birthday), and a transvestite drawer that, she says, her cat keeps getting into. She takes pride in her equipment, emphasizing its quality over what is frequently found in other S&M houses.
Many of Nona's clients stick with her for years, probably because she offers a very personal touch. She regularly chats with one of her clients before the start of their session and another takes her out to dinner before his. But she is quick to point out that sex is reserved exclusively for her significant other.
Now in her 50s, Nona is contemplating retirement from the profession, but not the lifestyle. She laments that many old-timers like herself have moved on, but she's confident that members of the next S&M generation, like Allison, her assistant (whom Nona has mentored since meeting her in a bagel shop which carried Nona's line of penis-shaped bagels), will continue to carry the S&M torch.
"New York is a tough market," says Nona. But before she hangs up her toys for good, she plans on living out one last fantasy: She'd like to be bullwhipped in broad daylight while standing in the middle of Queens Boulevard.
