This secret sorority of lesbian, transsexual, bisexual, and heterosexual women interested in BDSM play with other women recently celebrated its 25th anniversary, making it the oldest-known "independent organization for women of all sexual orientations exploring woman-to-woman BDSM play."
LSM holds 101-type orientations every month to recruit new members. Being a woman doesn't guarantee membership. To be accepted, a prospective recruit must first attend a safety demo (LSM places a major emphasis on safety, consensuality, and confidentiality) and orientation. Membership dues must be paid in advance. Membership carries advantages such as reciprocal arrangements with lesbian S&M groups in Portland and Baltimore and discounts at local S&M clubs, sex toy shops, and fetishwear stores.
Since BDSM is taboo-both in society at large and in the lesbian/feminist community-confidentiality at LSM's events is necessary to protect members and attendees who might otherwise be "exposed" at home, work, or elsewhere. While most events are open to the public, the organization is weak on outreach and publicity, so interested women usually find the organization through underground channels. Major events are often attended by well-known underground erotic figures and are typically publicized in Time Out New York and various local queer publications. For the most part, however, the organization relies on a small mailing list and word-of-mouth to generate interest.
LSM welcomes newcomers, experienced players, and the simply curious. The organization sponsors regular events (American Sign Language interpretation is provided on request), workshops, demonstrations, and lectures on topics such as negotiation, bondage, flogging, cutting, and piercing, and offers "play parties," often at local dungeons or S&M clubs. The latter are open to women only, who must pay an entrance fee (discounted for LSM members), and beginners can either watch while the more experienced play, or they can try their hand at any number of "scenes" with a partner (or partners) of choice.
