  • Are you a dyke with a uniform fetish? Physically fit? Crave discipline? Relish a challenge? Want more than "Don't ask, don't tell?" Serious lifestyle BDSM players with dedication, integrity, and self-knowledge have a new outlet: the Dyke Uniform Corps, or D.U.C.

Members of the D.U.C. wear real United States military and law enforcement uniforms, complete with dog tags, collars indicating rank, and custom D.U.C. sleeve insignias. These women have created a militaristic institution complete with ranking officers, codes of behavior, precise rules, and even a "Master of Arms," responsible for maintaining and preserving the D.U.C. colors. At the D.U.C., uniformed pride is front and center 365 days a year, not just the last weekend in June.

The D.U.C.'s mission statement proclaims: "The Dyke Uniform Corps is a private association of women of honor, integrity, and discipline whose mission is to share a common interest in the wearing of military and law enforcement uniforms within the S&M, leather, and fetish communities." Since April 1998, the D.U.C. has been holding events and training new recruits. Joining D.U.C. is not a commitment to take lightly. According to press rep and co-founder Correspondence Officer Butch, a new recruit can expect "a lot of learning and hard work" and must first apply by mail before beginning a personalized program that incorporates training in military courtesy, military drills, correct uniform care ("shirtsleeves must be rolled inside-out with 3-inch-wide cuffs ending exactly two inches above the elbows"), and S&M etiquette and safety. Candidates must "demonstrate or exemplify physical and mental fitness," complete "rigorous" physical basic training, and earn their status in the old-guard tradition by providing negotiated service to the General Officer at D.U.C. events. Such service is tailored to the individual recruit, based on her strengths, abilities, interests, and whether the recruit happens to be a BDSM top or bottom. Lest overeager applicants be misled, Correspondence Officer Butch points out that "the focus is on military lifestyle and role play. D.U.C. members may do BDSM and sex with anyone they please, but we do not do any BDSM or sex with our recruits." Sorry, Charlie. This is serious stuff for the dedicated and disciplined lifestyle player seeking regimented and structured training.

A recruit application fee and annual dues weed out those looking for a cheap thrill. Minimum recruit service is three months, with a minimum of 20 recruit program hours, after which the recruit becomes a member at the rank of Private. Promotion periods to ranks of Master Sergeant, Officer, and General are considered in increments of six months to two years. The formidable application queries recruit hopefuls' orientation and history in the leather scene, as well as actual military experience. Of paramount importance is the essay question, "What does wearing a uniform mean to you?" A good answer is this actual reply: "Wearing a uniform is indicative of fraternity (meaning you're a part of something close, a brotherhood for example, a community larger than yourself). It's an identity. When worn correctly by someone with the correct intent it also depicts honor, integrity, discipline, respect, loyalty, and strength."

Despite how intimidating all this sounds, Correspondence Officer Butch claims it is not difficult to gain membership, saying, "It takes a person of integrity and discipline, that is all." D.U.C. members are diverse racially and mostly butch (members wear standard male uniforms, though exceptions can be made for promising recruits of other gender persuasions). The members we saw were all impressively physically fit, reflecting their role models-members of the active U.S. military. There are currently 12 women in the D.U.C.-five officers and seven enlisted, with no active recruits at the present time. Come on, then, isn't now your time to serve?
