It's somewhat ironic that this quiet Chelsea block, which is the home of the NYPD's 10th Precinct, is also the locale of one of the city's most popular fetish boutiques. In the space of what was once DV8, Purple Passion/DV8 is a veritable heaven on earth for those into BDSM and fetishwear. The recently renovated shop, which sports purple walls, sprawls across 4,000 square feet and includes a terrific downstairs space that is used for both art exhibits and workshops.
The sales people are friendly, respectful, knowledgeable, and attentive, but not pushy, making the store a delight for those who just like to browse. And the customers-a rather mixed group-seemed to be quite friendly as well. They were browsing the racks and chatting back and forth about size and fit as if they were at Bloomies. One shopper, a noted photographer as it turns out, even asked for my help zipping up a rubber dress she was trying on.
The selection of fetishwear is truly extensive and will likely please both the mistress and master in your life. All your favorite labels are here, including Skin Two, Ectomorph, Naughty Nancy, and Polymorphe. We were especially keen on a latex nurse outfit ($300) by House of Harlot and a chain mail hood ($289). There's also a huge assortment of leather blindfolds, whips, floggers, spiked collars, corsets, and boots. Towards the back of the shop is a freestanding steel cage, which we couldn't help but think is reserved for customers who misbehave.
Atop the display case near the front of the shop sits a Purple Passion Barbie-no joke. Her original outfit-a conservative purple chiffon number-has been replaced by a racy, purple leather dress. Also near the store's entrance is a solid selection of educational books and videos as well as some fascinating S&M figurines. We would be remiss if we didn't mention the hard-to-overlook dildos by Domestic Partner, a French company. If size is your thing, check out their 14-inch-long, 6-inch-wide dong that goes for $120. According to the salesperson, it's a big seller.
